Hi, I'm Elizabeth!
A Lifelong Love of Gift Giving
Since finding my husband, Dan O'Sullivan (and let's be real, probably even before that), I've been in charge of gift giving to our friends and family.
Actually, if I'm honest, being a gift giver — whether from me, from someone else, or even from a group — has been my role for as long as I can remember.
It became a well-known secret in my family growing up that on the eves of Christmas, Mother's Day, or any other gift-giving occasion for my mom, my dad would get my sister and me together and task us with finding her a gift from him.
And yes, usually a card, too, until he got caught! LOL!
He wasn't particularly good at gift giving and almost always waited until the last minute to shop. My mom, upon receiving the gift, almost always loved it, even though she secretly knew who had actually found it for her.
I've always loved finding that perfect thing that makes someone smile, lets them know how much they mean to me, and shows them that I see them for who they truly are as a creation of the Lord.
As a teenager, and even as a young adult, I would spend hours in a Hallmark store sifting through all the cards until I found the perfect one for the loved one I had in mind.
The process, from beginning to end, brought me so much joy. And often, it brought just as much joy to the person receiving my card and gift.
Finding My God-Given Gifts
A Journey Through Education and Career Changes
Growing up, I never felt like I had much to offer. But I knew I was creative, great with kids (especially babies and toddlers who were just developing language), and able to see details in people that often went unnoticed by others.
At first, I thought I should go into pediatric nursing, but ya know, those science classes just weren't my thing!
My second option was special education. But by that point in college, between a family tragedy during my freshman year (and with it, the loss of my ability to be creative in an artistic way) and having ADHD, my grades were all over the place. It seemed like they were keeping me out of that field.
So I settled into elementary education.
But two years into teaching, I was already looking for something different.
See, I viewed each of my students as a unique individual with unique needs. I wanted to teach in a way that met everyone's individual learning styles and needs.
Unfortunately, that's very difficult to do as a classroom teacher, and I learned pretty quickly that I wouldn't survive working that way.
So I began taking post-baccalaureate courses in hopes of becoming a speech-language pathologist (SLP).
But yes — again — those sciences! Ugh!!
Trying to compete with master's-level candidates who already had bachelor's degrees in speech-language pathology didn't help either.
So I went back to the only thing I knew: elementary teaching.
And it didn't go well.
During this time, I also pursued a graduate certificate in special education because I knew that was my only hope of surviving in a school-based setting.
In September 2009, I finally landed a position I loved as a public pre-K inclusion teacher.
But my mental health took a turn for the worse, and by 2011, I found myself no longer able to work — not in a school, and not really anywhere.
Searching for Where I Belonged
I felt like a fish out of water, a square peg constantly being asked:
"Which round hole would you like to try to fit into this time?"
Inevitably, I experienced years of trying and failing to find a career that fit me.
Eventually, I tried opening my own business as a dyslexia interventionist. I was more successful in that than in anything else I'd pursued, but my work kept getting interrupted by awful panic cycles.
Not only was that difficult for running a business, but it was also terrible for the students who needed me to be consistent over a long period of time.
The problem was that I was extremely passionate about what I was teaching and who I was teaching it to.
I realized that my gift of seeing people's unique potential and helping that potential come alive was truly a gift from the Lord.
But I didn't know what to do with it when my mental health kept getting in the way.
God had a plan.
I didn't know what that plan was at the time, but I was doing my best to seek it out and follow it.
No, it definitely wasn't a linear journey.
But all of these experiences would eventually play a part in the pivotal days of January 2025, when Uniquely Yours Creatives was born.
Rediscovering My Creativity
Finding Joy in Creating Again
By this point, much of my mental health was being effectively managed.
But in the spring of 2024, I was hit with debilitating, widespread, and unpredictable chronic pain and fatigue.
I knew that if I were going to try working again, it had to be something I could do from home, where I was my own boss and wasn't dependent on showing up at a set time on a regular basis.
At the same time, my creativity was beginning to return in the form of making custom cakes and cupcakes for family and friends as a hobby.
Once the chronic pain and fatigue hit, though, even that became a very occasional hobby.
But that baking hobby led me to buy my first Cricut machine so I could make cake toppers.
And let's just say, from my very first creation in Cricut's design software, I was hooked!
It was love at first sight!
Which was great, because Dan and I were definitely broke and had no money left at that point to put toward a gift budget!
So Dan came up with a solution:
"Let's use our creativity to make gifts with the Cricut!"
And just like that, my new hobby was born.
My Cricut quickly became my favorite toy to play with!
Y'all, I can barely draw stick figures, let alone make gifts by hand. But now, with software that gives me options, I can combine and slice images together with the best of them!
For a year and a half, I made gifts that were well received by upwards of 30 family members and friends.
Little did I know where this hobby would eventually lead.
The Birth of Uniquely Yours Creatives
A Little Seed of an Idea
Then came January 2025.
It was our annual budget-setting time, which also meant my annual freak-out moment:
"How are we going to make it this year on Dan's income alone?"
Which inevitably led to my other annual freak-out:
"I need to go back to work, but how and where?!?!"
One morning, I was processing all of this with my therapist when she asked:
"What about selling your crafts?"
And, not so kindly — much like Abraham and Sarah in the Old Testament when God promised that Sarah would one day become pregnant despite her old age — I laughed in her face!
But the seed had been planted.
When God Began Opening Doors
At the time, I had been getting weekly massages, if not more frequently, to try to manage the excruciating and unpredictable pain and fatigue.
That fateful afternoon, after my therapist had planted the seed, I was in my massage session when the idea began to take root.
I started thinking more and more about what she had said and brought my questions to God.
What would I make?
How would I keep a business going when I didn't know what the day, let alone the hour, would bring?
Was there someone I could partner with?
And who would that be?
As the Lord sometimes does, like a whisper, at least one of those questions began to be answered:
Ask Geoff.
Geoff had great customer service experience from his time at Chick-fil-A. He was always telling us about the unique and personal interactions he'd had with repeat customers coming through the drive-thru.
He was also out of work at the time and trying to figure out his next career move.
And he had a very creative mind.
Not to mention, we had worked well together for years on personal projects!
I got so excited about this idea — the very same idea I'd laughed at only hours earlier — that I called Geoff as soon as I started walking to my car after my appointment.
I told him about my crazy idea and asked if he would want to build this company with me.
Without hesitation, he said:
"Sure!"
And that's how the tiny mustard seed of Uniquely Yours Creatives got its start.
Building a Business with Purpose
We immediately sprang into action.
What equipment and supplies would we need? What would our name be? What would make up our brand identity?
Within a day, the name was born, and we started the process of getting our LLC.
We talked more and more about who we were, what we stood for, and ultimately how our company could help address a problem we saw throughout society.
So many people live under generalized labels that strip away, or at least water down, their uniqueness and God-given purpose.
We had both spent much of our lives defining ourselves by labels assigned to us by doctors, other professionals, and even ourselves.
We knew personally the difficulty and harm that can come from allowing those labels to prevent us from seeing who God created us to be.
More importantly, we knew how deeply people long to be seen, known, heard, and loved for their quirky, unique personalities.
Yes, our personalities are partly shaped by the world around us. But at our core, we were created and loved into existence by the God of the Universe.
Discovering that part of ourselves, and allowing the Lord to love us as we truly are, is the key to finding our authentic selves.
Every day brought new challenges and gifts.
But with God at the center, anything is possible!
"For I know the plans I have for you," says the Lord. "Plans to prosper and not to harm you. Plans for hope and a future." — Jeremiah 29:11
Why Your Name Matters
Celebrating Your God-Given Identity
As time went on and we worked to find our niche, the Lord began showing us just how vital a person's name is to their identity.
Suddenly, the importance of names started appearing everywhere we turned.
It became clear that we were meant to create a deeply personal gift-making experience, one centered around the recipient's God-given name.
"I have called you by name; you are mine." — Isaiah 43:1
Our names are more than just words used to identify us.
They are part of who we are.
And at Uniquely Yours Creatives, that understanding became the foundation of what we wanted to create.
Bringing the Person Back into Personalized Products
You're More Than an Order Number
There are thousands of monogram shops.
Just open your phone, visit Etsy, and you can order something personalized without ever interacting with the seller.
But therein lies the problem.
You can become just another order number.
And that's not at all what I want Uniquely Yours Creatives to be.
I understand that different people communicate in different ways, but my goal is to help you and your loved ones feel seen, heard, known, and loved by bringing the person back into the process of personalized products.
You are not an order number.
And you never should be!
You are uniquely you, and I want to get to know you and your loved ones personally through each product or gift I create.
Every Detail Tells a Story
I know the initial ordering process is a little more involved than ordering from an Etsy shop.
But I don't ever want Uniquely Yours Creatives to be just another Etsy shop.
Taking the time matters.
First, there's the order form.
Then, there's the design interview.
And finally, there's the creation of a unique product made especially with you or your loved one in mind.
I believe slowing down in our overscheduled society matters.
Otherwise, how will we catch the whispers of the Lord, which are ultimately what matters most in life?
The font you choose, the images you select, and the overall design you create for your loved one matter.
They can make all the difference in the world.
They're little details that might seem insignificant, but they aren't.
They tell the story of how you know and love your person to the depths of their core.
They communicate that their individuality shines through in all they do.
And most importantly, they say:
"I see you. I know you. And I want you to see how special you are, too."
More Than a Business — A Mission
Learning to Embrace My Own Uniqueness
At some point in 2025, I realized that some of the gifts I cherish most are the ones centered around my own name.
When I was lost in mental illness for more than a decade and couldn't find my way out, even through prayer, the Lord helped me find gifts and cards that spoke to how much I was loved and how important I was simply for being my weird, quirky self.
And to come full circle, one of the greatest gifts in my life has been my husband.
Early in our relationship, Dan helped me embrace my "weirdness" as a good thing.
That simple encouragement helped me see something I had struggled to recognize for so long.
My uniqueness wasn't something I needed to hide.
It was something worth celebrating.
Created to Be Seen, Known, and Loved
It's because I have been so greatly loved, but also so greatly hurt, lost, and missed, that this company is not just a company to me.
It's a mission.
It's my way of bringing a little bit of Christ into each of your worlds and into the lives of those you love.
It's an opportunity to help each of us reclaim our identity as beloved sons and daughters of the Lord on High.
To remember that we matter.
To our families.
To our friends.
To the people whose lives we touch.
But most of all, to Christ, who knew us before we were conceived in our mothers' wombs and who knows us now and always.
My hope is that every gift created through Uniquely Yours Creatives reminds someone that they are deeply loved, intentionally created, and wonderfully unique.
May you always know your unique identity and purpose in this crazy world, and may you live in the world without being defined by it.
With love and blessings,
Elizabeth
